Domaine Aurélien Chatagnier

Côte Rôtie

This deep reflective ruby-coloured wine has pronounced notes of black fruits (blackberry, black currant, black plum) and integrated notes of black pepper and spice. These aromatic flavours with its silky tannins coat the palate as they persist on the palate with a long finish. Drink now or lay it on its side and come back to it in a couple years.
Vintage

Description

Only 1000 bottles produced from just 0.21 hectares in the heart of the Côte Rôtie appellation, this wine is made from 100% Syrah grown on schiste, giving structure and spiciness that has the potential to age.

The grapes are harvested manually in which 65% are destemmed. Wild natural yeasts take over the fermentation process as it adds complexity to the already high-quality fruit being processed. The wine then spends 15 months in oak with about two-thirds being new, giving the wine notes of vanilla, baking spices and structure.

ABV: 13.5%

Producer Info

Aurélien was only 22 years old when he first decided to found his own domaine in 2002. Although he does not come from a winemaking family, working in the vineyards throughout his teenage years allowed him to acquire, develop and hone his skills on the field as well as in the winery. While starting off with merely 1.2 hectares of rented vines and vinifying at his friend and mentor François Villard, he steadily purchased and replanted vineyards, building up to 8 hectares as of today. Aurélien has been practicing organic farming since 2004 and focuses on the pure expression of the grapes and vineyards in his winemaking. Using native yeasts, limiting new oak and bottling without fining or filtration are only a few techniques he uses to articulate his passion.
